I am a first time tenant; how will I know how much bills I pay?

Being a first time tenant is difficult since it’s hard to anticipate how much utility bills will be paid. In accordance with the law the property needs to have an EPC or an Energy Performance Certificate. This certificate will give you an idea of the property’s energy rating, this will allow you to gauge the energy cost of the property you are about to rent.

Alternatively, you can inquire the estate agent to ask the old tenants of how much bill do they usually pay, or you can ask some of your friends who has the same size and space with the property you are about to rent and if it has the same value of amount of utility bills they are paying.

If you have noticed that your bills are significantly different from all other tenants, then discuss it with your landlord to create an agreement of any improvements to the place.
